Oppo A5S
The Oppo A5s is positioned in the sub-Rs. 10,000 segment. It has a big 6.2-inch display with a waterdrop notch. The display has HD+ resolution and decent viewing angles but it does not get bright enough when outdoors. Oppo has picked the MediaTek Helio P35 SoC to power the A5s. It offers decent performance but multitasking wasn’t snappy.
In terms of software, the Oppo A5s runs ColorOS 5.2 on top of Android 8.1 Oreo. It is a dated version of the operating system. We also noticed that the Oppo A5s had some amount of bloatware pre-installed. The Oppo A5s has a 4230mAh battery and lasted us for one full day. The supplied charger is slow and took close to 2 hours to charge completely.
Oppo A9 (2020)
Oppo has refreshed its mid-range A-series in order to keep up with the competition. The new A9 2020 boasts of four rear cameras, a capable processor, and a big battery. It offers a few neat touches such as reverse charging, stereo speakers, and a taller-than-usual 20:9 display. This phone is a bit bulky and difficult to use but it looks slick.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor is now quite common on phones that cost less than the Oppo A9 2020, which is particularly a problem for the higher-priced variant. You get 128GB of storage and either 4GB or 8GB of RAM, but competitors have more powerful models with better features and look at the same price as the 8GB RAM variant.
The screen is decent, and while the HD+ resolution is a bit disappointing for general use, it does help heavy games run relatively better. Oppo’s ColorOS skin has plenty of features but there’s a lot of bloatware and notification spam.
Oppo A5 (2020)
Oppo A5 2020 smartphone was launched on 11th September 2019. The phone comes with a 6.50-inch touchscreen display. Oppo A5 2020 is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor. It comes with 3GB of RAM. The Oppo A5 2020 runs Android 9 Pie and is powered by a 5000mAh battery.
As far as the cameras are concerned, the Oppo A5 2020 on the rear packs a 12-megapixel primary camera; a second 8-megapixel camera; a third 2-megapixel camera, and a fourth 2-megapixel camera. It sports an 8-megapixel camera on the front for selfies.
The Oppo A5 2020 runs ColorOS 6.0.1 based on Android 9 Pie and packs 64GB of inbuilt storage that can be expanded via microSD card (up to 256GB) with a dedicated slot. The Oppo A5 2020 is a dual-SIM smartphone that accepts Nano-SIM and Nano-SIM cards. It was launched in Dazzling White and Mirror Black colors.
Connectivity options on the Oppo A5 2020 include Wi-Fi, GPS, Wi-Fi Direct, 3G, and 4G (with support for Band 40 used by some LTE networks in India) with active 4G on both SIM cards. Sensors on the phone include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, and fingerprint sensor.
OnePlus 8 Pro
The OnePlus 8 Pro has a similar design as the OnePlus 8 but with some subtle changes. Its display is actually rounded on the sides, rather than just having curved glass like on the 8. It has a pretty big 6.78-inch QHD+ (1440×3168-pixel) AMOLED panel, with a claimed high color accuracy and HDR10+ support. New this year is the 120Hz refresh rate. The display is vibrant, colorful, and bright.
The software experience is very similar to that of the OnPlus 8, with the exception of controls for some additions such as reverse wireless charging and video playback enhancement. The interface feels snappy, and OxygenOS in general runs very well.
App and gaming performance is pretty solid. The stereo speakers sound great and the Dolby Atmos setting helps improve quality and spatial separation.
The rear cameras get a big upgrade. The main 48-megapixel camera captures very good details and colors under most lighting conditions. The wide-angle camera also shoots great pictures and can even do extreme close-up photography. The telephoto camera is good too, and nearly on par with the Samsung Galaxy S20+ in terms of quality.
Battery life is excellent but the big addition here is wireless charging. The 8 Pro also supports reverse wireless charging.
OnePlus Nord
The OnePlus Nord is a new budget offering from OnePlus, which manages to deliver a similar Android experience as the OnePlus 8, but at a more affordable price. OnePlus has kept all the staples such as the AMOLED display, Warp Charge fast charging, and a big battery in the Nord. However, it has made some cuts when it comes to the SoC and the build quality. The OnePlus Nord still has glass on the back, but instead of a metal frame, it’s plastic.
The SoC used is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G and not an 800-series chip as we’re used to seeing. However, the Nord does support 5G, which is a cool bonus. As an overall package, it’s really hard to find fault with the OnePlus Nord. App and gaming performance is good, it captures good photos and videos in daylight, and the display supports HDR10+.
Low-light image quality suffers a bit, but that’s pretty much this phone’s only major weakness. Battery life is very good and the single speaker gets decently loud. One impressive feature of the OnePlus Nord is its ability to shoot selfie videos at 4K 60fps, which is something even the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro can’t do.
OnePlus 6T
The new OnePlus 6T introduces an in-display fingerprint sensor that is sure to draw attention and be the one feature that you really want to show off. It also has a smaller notch, bigger screen and higher capacity battery, but loses the notification LED and 3.5mm audio jack. Nearly everything else is the same as it was with the OnePlus 6.
There’s still no wireless charging or IP rating, which are the only ways in which this phone doesn’t feel like a true flagship. The camera performance is pretty good, though it suffers at night.
The battery will get you through a full day. The OnePlus 6T replaces the OnePlus 6 but isn’t necessarily a compelling upgrade.
